Statement
As we grow older we lose our natural instinct for communicating with animals. The main theme of my work is centered on the idea that humans and nature are connected, not merely on an environmental or ecological level, but also on a deep emotional, intellectual, and spiritual level.
The sources of my images come from the media and nature. Some of the media sources I use are from stories that I have read, movies/cartoons that I have seen, video games, and children’s art. From nature, I use images such as plants, animals, landscapes, flowers, and insects. When I use images from nature, I intentionally try to be as objective as possible because I do not want to inject any of my personal biases and ideas about animals. I present my images using abstract forms that do not tell a story but simply capture a timeless or random moment. That is why my images appear to be floating in space or in constant motion. I use acrylic, water-based ink pens, and shiny metallic colors to create a processed, manufactured feeling. I like using bright playful colors because they bring out my inner child and allow me to be free with my work.
The characters in my work are created impulsively, much like the way I used to draw as a child. I use them as a representation of how society today exploits animals for our personal entertainment or for commercial purposes. If I were to live in a world where humans and animals were connected, then this is how I would see it.
